-- The Home Page for Trappe The Wye Grist Mill, (c.1682) is the oldest frame grist mill on the Eastern Shore and the oldest industrial, commercial structure in continuous use in the state of Maryland. Here you can see how wheat and corn are stoneground by water power into flour and meal. Located just off Route 50 On Route 662, (14296 Old Wye Mills Road, Wye Mills). Today's mill is much as it was in the early nineteenth century, with a big steel water wheel, a pair of French buhr stones, and a maze of functioning wooden chutes and elevators. The sense of the past is strong here. A curator is on hand to explain the mill's history, and on alternate Saturdays, (1st and 3rd Saturdays of the month), volunteers assist in bringing the mill back to life - when the mill is operating the floor boards rumble, the sound of machinery fills your ears, and the aroma of freshly ground grain permeates the air. Open from mid-April through mid-November. Mill hours are Mon-Thurs 10 AM - 1 PM; Fri, Sat & Sun 10 AM - 4 PM. Group tours are available by appointment 410-827-3850.. E-mail: oldwyemill@goeaston.net Wye Mill Day and Harvest Pig Roast Event is held in October. Colonial and eighteenth century crafts and trades demonstrated and sold: woodworkers, beekeepers, candle-makers, jewelry makers, spinners, broom makers, quilters, blacksmiths, soapmakers, colonial re-enactors, Orrell's Beaten Biscuits, children's activities, ox cart rides, bluegrass music and more.
